Project Objective:
The objective of this study was to "Minimize stresses induced in the gate valve body through various topology techniques and generating an optimal design with the same packaging dimensions". The stresses were being generated due to high internal fluid pressure of 15.3 MPa flowing through the valve.

My Role:
I used ABAQUS for this project. Quadratic Tetrahedron elements were used for meshing the topology . Features like ribs & stress bands were added to reduce the effect of stress concentration. The optimized behavior was monitored against minimizing the ratio of Mass to Factor of Safety.

Results:
The factor of safety was increased from 0.66 to 2.20 for the given load and boundary conditions. The corresponding body stresses were reduced by 70%.
